Joe is young, unknowing and unaware concerning the world he lives in - as almost everyone else. But he is quite smart, though he is not aware of this either. He merely thinks himself to be mediocre - in all respects.
That's why he works for a respectable company as accounting clerk in a small distribution consisting of only 15 employees. Besides being a reliable and well functioning member of the society he has an insatiable need for variations. This , his restlessness and the fact, that he camouflages all this unconsciously make him a rather unorthodox member of the society - and if he wasn't that good at it, he'd run the risk of being marked a deviation himself.

Only his friend, the unconventional Mike sees him for what he is: an individual. But nowadays this is quite a dangerous attribute they both share. Unfortunately Joe is totally contaminated by the inflicted maxim that individualism is bad and denies it towards himself. But his friendship with Mike goes too deep to break up with him.

Martin is chief executive of the distribution in which Joe works and thus his direct superior.

The main part of Martin's work is to form and manipulate new company employees into average accounting clerks. He is the best there is in levelling any tendencies towards deviation. His methods maybe a little controversial among his colleagues, but his success rate is all the backup he needs.
At first he is an easy-going type, allowing them to get away with certain dangerously deviant actions. Then, if they do not repent on their own, he changes the tune. It is rumoured that even some new employees have vanished and were never seen again.

Mike likes the unknown, the unpredictable and the unconventional. That is most unfortunate for him.
This marks him with the stigma of deviation and condemns him to work with the Peacekeeper Corps in the Middle East. Usually they don't get very old down there. But Mike has what it takes to survive.
He truly appreciates Joe's friendship, who never wavered from the prospect to deal with a deviation. One that cannot be 'cured' by simple counselling sessions. No, Mike emerged from a long line of 'degenerative heritage' - as Joe's parents have put it once.
Deep down in his heart, Mike admires Joe for his unconscious display of courage. When he comes into contact with some mysterious subjects who claim to be a secret society of artists, Mike recognises certain patterns in his past and finally wants to help Joe to find to himself, his true self which hungers for a creative vent.
